How can we assist builders, both private and nonprofit, in developing housing sites that area workers can afford?

The Volusia-Flagler United Way’s ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed) Report shows that approximately 40 percent of our locals are living paycheck to paycheck. A major factor is that many of them are working 2-3 jobs and still paying 50 percent or more of their take-home pay on rent and utilities.

At the same time, private entities face substantial obstacles to providing housing that is affordable for frontline employees. The costs of purchasing land and building materials, and of meeting regulatory requirements for zoning, parking and impact fees, can make such endeavors economically unworkable.

Join us on November 29 for a Tallahassee Speaker Series event for a robust conversation to address these challenges. The Chamber has arranged several speakers to explain the pros and cons of workforce housing and explore ideas that might lead to sustainable solutions. The program will run from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m., and will be followed by a social hour from 5:00 - 6:00 p.m. Your admission includes one drink and assorted appetizers during the social hour.
